The Rail Runners originally began as a jam that included Oz Childs (guitar) and Justin Thorp (Fiddle) The band changed as it began playing music at venues in Portland and surrounding cities.
Although the band uses instruments normally associated with bluegrass, it is really an Americana band, playing blues, Rock, jazz, country and indie folk music written in the United States, Canada, England and France.
Oz, Justin, Jim and Paul all began singing and playing music either in grade school or as pre-teens and never stopped.
And the band’s name, “The Rail Runners” was Oz’s idea. Both he and Paul love trains and railroading.
The band plays a wide range of music coming from musicians and bands like Dire Straits, The Eagles, Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, Leon McCauliffe Jethro Tull, Amy Winehouse, Roger Waters, Tom Petty and, master banjo and fiddle instrumentalists like Bill Keith and Earl Scruggs and Johnny Gimbal.
With a music background that includes choral groups, classical music as well as America’s best rock and folk, Rail Runners has a wide range of music skills and talents to draw on for everyone’s listening and dancing enjoyment.
